Prairie Burn 2009
Programs / Events
A team of volunteers conducted a controlled burn to simulate the effect that natural
fires would have in the wild. The intense heat rejuvenates native plant species by
"waking up" dormant native seeds and incinerating non-native plants and seeds
that would compete with them. The fire also knocks back the growth of tree
seedlings, thus maintaining the open prairie.
This tank is full of water.

Beating the flames with brooms and metal shovels works best.

How neatly the fire burns just up to the trail edge, once we've carefully burned a perimeter.
