Quail Re-introduction Project 2010

In summer and fall 2010, the board of DCNP and a handful of
helpers raised and released nearly 50 native wild quail chicks in the
nature park.

A large, heated surrogator box was placed at the edge of the woods,
and the chicks remained inside for about 6 weeks.  The volunteers
took shifts caring for them around the clock, making sure they had
fresh food, clean water, and sufficient heat and ventilation.  It was a
very difficult job, but once they were banded and released, it was
gratifying too.

Thank you to the
Starling Sanctuary which provided a $500 grant to
help purchase the chicks, quail food, and other costs of this project.

Big thanks as well to
Waste Management of Indiana who let us use
their surrogator!
Please send us email with your sightings.
