About the event
Folks, this is your chance to participate in a controlled burn of a natural area by trained individuals. DNP periodically burns the prairie area to fight invasive species, reduce the amount of small trees and shrubs that threaten to shade out the native prairie plants and create some ashen fertilizer for the remaining plants. Fire is a necessary, natural component to prairie maintenance and is essential to the health of this climax community.
If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please bring proper clothing (long sleeve shirts, long pants, boots, gloves, etc.), a metal snow shovel if you have one, a disposable non-plastic broom and a mask.
